Ken Jones, a 59-year-old Texan, has turned his teenage dream into reality by winning a bodybuilding competition, shedding a whopping 185 pounds in the process. Jones, who once aspired to compete in the Mr. Olympia bodybuilding competition, took a 26-year hiatus from fitness before deciding to transform his health upon retirement.

“I thought ‘I’m going to do that one of these days,'” Jones said, recalling his youthful ambition.

His journey to the bodybuilding stage wasn’t a walk in the park. He started as a young adult with ‘no idea’ what he was doing, relying on magazines for advice. “I ate a can of tuna for breakfast. I ate a can of tuna for lunch, with maybe or maybe not some rice. And I ate a can of tuna for dinner,” he shared.

After a long break from fitness, Jones decided to get back in shape. He lost about 80 pounds in a year and a half through regular walking and mindful eating. His transformation didn’t stop there.

Jones connected with a younger bodybuilding enthusiast and started training with him. In 2019, he competed in his first show and was hooked.

“Once I did that, my next goal was to win one,” he said. And win he did. In September 2021, Jones clinched first place in his division in the Naturally Fit Federation competition. Now, he’s aiming for his pro card, a prestigious designation given by the International Federation of Bodybuilders.

Jones’ story is a testament to the power of determination and goal-setting. “I’m hard-headed,” he said. “I love it when people tell me I can’t do something.”

He’s competed against athletes as young as 18 and has no plans to slow down. “There’s a gentleman in the gym where I train who’s fixing to be 90 years old. You ain’t never too old for this,” Jones said. “You can’t tell yourself you can’t do this, or you’re too old for this. You can’t compare yourself to the younger guys. You’re you and hey, you’re here.”
