Ryan Parrish leads Dreadnoughts to twin weightlifting champ
Lakeland junior Rhyan Parrish is making waves in the weightlifting world. Balancing her passion for singing at Harrison School of the Arts with her love for weightlifting, Parrish is proving she’s a force to be reckoned with.
A state-qualifier as a freshman, she’s now leading the Dreadnaughts’ girls weightlifting team to victory, clinching the 119-pound division in both Traditional and Olympic at the recent Class 3A, District 10 girls weightlifting meet.
Parrish’s performance was instrumental in securing district titles for Lakeland in both competitions, leaving Haines City and Winter Haven trailing in second and third place respectively. “We were pushing numbers that I would be able to win districts with, so I’m excited for regionals and state,” Parrish said, her excitement palpable.
Parrish’s love for weightlifting began in sixth grade, and she’s been hooked ever since. She’s particularly drawn to the technical precision required in Olympic lifting, describing it as “so explosive and technically accurate.” Despite her busy schedule, which includes singing, taking AP classes, and working at Chick-fil-A, Parrish finds balance in her weightlifting passion.
Parrish’s dedication to training is evident in her performance. Despite some setbacks, she’s improved her snatch totals from 95 pounds last year to 120 pounds this year. Her best clean and jerk this year is 180 pounds. “I’ve done 145 (this year), but last year, I did 155 so I’m working on that,” she said.
Lakeland coach Art Bennett praised Parrish’s commitment to the sport, saying, “I’ve been doing this for 17 years, and I’ve never had a lifter like her. She is dedicated. She’ll go home and lift. She goes to another club, and she’s here and lift.”
Parrish’s ultimate goal is to win a state title in girls’ weightlifting, but she’s also eyeing international competitions like the IWF Worlds or the Pan-Am games. With her unwavering dedication and impressive performance, it’s clear that Parrish is a rising star in the weightlifting world.
