Bulgarian weightlifting sensation, Karlos Nasar, is back with a bang after a serious Achilles tendon injury sidelined him earlier this year.

The 19-year-old made a triumphant return to the platform at the IWF Grand Prix II and International Qatar Cup in Doha, setting a new Junior and Senior world record in the process.

Nasar, who competes in the 89-kilogram category, lifted a staggering 223 kilograms (491.6 pounds) in the clean & jerk, edging past the previous record held by China’s Tian Tao by a single kilogram.

He also snatched 170 kilograms (374.7 pounds), securing the overall gold medal at the Prix. His impressive performance also set a new Junior world record, a title he previously held.

Nasar’s gutsy attempts and victories on the international stage have quickly earned him a reputation as a force to be reckoned with. His absence from the 89-kilogram category earlier this year allowed other athletes to break into the IWF’s top-10 leaderboard.

However, his recent performance in Qatar sends a clear message: Nasar is the one to beat in the 89s as we approach the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

The IWF Grand Prix II, one of the final major international qualification events before the Paris Games, runs in Doha, Qatar from Dec. 4 to 14. With Nasar back in action, the weightlifting world is sure to be on the edge of their seats, eager to witness the fruits of his relentless training and fitness journey.

“His return is a testament to his resilience and determination,” said an industry insider. “Nasar’s performance is a reminder that champions are not defined by their setbacks, but by their comebacks.”
