The Omega XL supplement is popular for two main reasons - the online raves and Larry King, of all people.

The product claims to benefit those who suffer from joint pain and inflammation, and similar health issues.

As such, Omega XL is a favorite supplement among older folks, which probably explains Larry King’s strange, incongruous promotion of it… Although his face isn’t exactly the most inviting.

Mr. King aside, tons of Omega XL reviews online are mostly positive.

But does Omega XL live up to the hype? Our team without resident dietitian spent almost a month's worth of research - ingredients and clinical studies included, to see if this product does.

Let's get into the details of our research with this Omega XL review.

What is Omega XL?

Omega XL

Omega XL is a dietary supplement with the content of more than 30 different fatty acids with a range of health benefits and joint pain relief effects. Omega XL contains the blend of  Omega-3 fatty acids including EPA and DHA, all of which are sourced from natural ingredients, as claimed by the Great Healthworks, the Omega XL manufacturer.

Instead of obtaining these essential fatty acids from fish or algae, which can give a fishy aftertaste like any other fish oil extract, this product sourced them from green-lipped mussels.

Arthritis organizations have recommended these natural ingredients (derived from the green lipped mussels) to relieve pain in the joints, especially for older people who may be more sensitive to synthetic products than young people and children.

According to the Great Healthworks,  the main active ingredient in this product is a compound called PCSO-524 (sounds like a Star Wars droid) which is supposedly 89% more effective at reducing joint pain than standard fish oil.

The green lipped mussels supplement, Omega XL is intended to be taken 1-2 times a day, depending on your weight. It is always advised to consult your doctor for a proper dosage recommendation, rather than relying solely on reviews or manufacturers' claims.

So, you’ve read the customer reviews, but what does Great Health Works claim to actually be in this product?

  1. PCSO-524 – This ingredient’s full name is Perna Canaliculus Green-lipped Mussel Extract, so I’m quite glad that they shortened it. Because this ingredient doesn’t come from fish but from these green lipped mussels, it doesn’t have a fishy aftertaste, which is something that a lot of users seem to like. According to a recent study, PCSO-524, also know as lyprinol, is 89% more effective for joint pain ease when compared to regular DHA and EPA fish-based supplements, making it great for joint pain and inflammation.
  2. Omega 3 Fatty Acids – These are known for helping to relieve painful joints, and some studies suggest that they also act as a natural anti-inflammatory, reducing inflammation.
  3. Vitamin E - Vitamin E  as an ingredient has numerous health benefits, such as improving skin and nail health. It’s a good addition to this patented oil.
  4. Monounsaturated Olive Oil – Monounsaturated olive oil (i.e. extra virgin olive oil) is known as the healthiest fat on earth, and it’s easy to see why. Better get that extra virgin olive oil into your daily menu.

MUFAs (monounsaturated fatty acids) have been found to lower total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. In addition, some research shows that MUFAs may benefit insulin levels and blood sugar control, which can be helpful if you have or are at risk of type 2 diabetes.

Omega XL

Omega XL contains the blend of ingredients that help with the treatment of painful joints and inflammation, making it popular with older people who might otherwise use some regular fish oil extract to help their bone health.

The vitamin E content is also worth noting. Apart from keeping the skin supple and young looking, vitamin E, often found in olive oil, helps reduce joints inflammation.

Elders who are suffering from osteoarthritis typical lack vitamin E in their diet, so a supplement like Omega XL may be prescribed.

Omega XL comes in soft gel capsules, which is something most elders more appreciate.

With its target market being on the older side, it makes sense to go with the soft gel capsules for this supplement.

Some users, in their Omega XL reviews, report improved mobility and reduced joint pain after taking the product. However, there are also some who say that they didn’t feel any difference at all after taking Omega XL.

  • Extracted from non-animal sources
  • Toxin-free and fights free radicals
  • Improves joint health and can improve mobility and vitality
  • Small easy-to-swallow soft capsule
  • Quite expensive
  • Some customer reviews spoke about seeing no effects
  • Quality of ingredients such as the green lipped mussel extract is not established

Side Effects

joint pain

So, what are the side effects of this potent mussel based supplement?

Well, there are side effects of having too many Omega-3 (from any source), including high blood sugar, low blood pressure, and diarrhea.

After taking the Omega XL product, some users noticed gaining more weight after taking pills. Others also mentioned that Omega XL did nothing to improve the mobility or health of their joints.

However, the effect on pain relief seems to be a common answer in the user reviews -- joint pains were reportedly reduced, albeit temporary. In some reviews it is also said that Omega XL did little compared to the usual fish oil based supplements.

Furthermore, the steep price is a common pain point among users, and there’s no denying that the Omega XL supplement is on the expensive side when compared to other supplements out there.

How Much Does Omega XL Cost?

Is Omega XL better than fish oil?

The Omega XL product may be more useful than fish oil for some users due to its active ingredients, which are sourced from mussels. Is Omega XL good for your heart?

Omega XL claims to be good for your heart health due to the Omega-3  supplement that it contains. These healthy fatty acids can help decrease triglycerides, slightly reduce blood pressure, reduce the risk of blood clotting, and decrease stroke and heart failure risks, thus, improving the overall heart health. It can also help reduce the risk of problems with an irregular heartbeat.

However, it is worth noting that the body is unable to absorb and make use of omega 3 without other omega fatty acids.

Does Omega XL help arthritis?

The Omega XL may help with rheumatoid arthritis and other joint problems. This is due to its Omega-3 fatty acids and PCSO-524. Arthritis and other joint problems are also better addressed when omega-3 supplement is paired with the blend of the omega 7 and 9 fatty acids.

Is Omega XL good for back pain?

This product may be good for back pain. It claims to reduce inflammation in your body, helping to reduce such pains and health issues.

However, dietary supplements such as Omega XL are recommended to use as part of a healthy diet and active lifestyle. If you’re looking to specifically target and reduce your back ache, you may want to look for other medicines.

Is Omega XL good for fibromyalgia?

This product may be good for fibromyalgia, as some studies suggest that Omega-3 fatty acids could help reduce symptoms of fibromyalgia if you use it at the recommended supplement dosage. Is Omega XL good for lowering cholesterol?

This product may help lower cholesterol due to its lipid extract, or Omega-3 fatty acids content. This is because these fatty acids can effectively reduce bodily inflammation, decrease plaque growth in your arteries, and help thin your blood. All of these effects combined can indeed reduce your cholesterol , especially if you eat a healthy diet too.

Is Omega XL good for diabetes?

This product may be good for diabetes if taken as part of a recommended healthy diet. For example, according to the research, Omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA), together with Omega-7 and Omega-9 can help prevent any health issue of the liver (ie. fatty liver). To be more on the safe side, you should always consult your physician about the best medication and supplement to take.

Is Omega XL a fat thinner?

No, Omega XL is not a fat thinner. Some users share side effects of loose stools and diarrhea, which can lead some people to think that the product is a fat thinner. However, the Omega XL supplement is primarily formulated for inflammation and joint pain relief in older people.

Is Omega XL approved by the FDA?

No, this Omega XL product is not approved by the FDA. Many users still find the product to be useful, but the official US Food and Drug Administration has not yet given the product their seal of approval.

Should You Buy Omega XL?

The bottom line is that Omega XL may work for people with joint problems who need pain relief. The ingredients are common to many omega-3 supplements, but the user reviews seem to be more mixed.

Also, the quality of vitamin E from the olive oil and green lipped mussel based omega-3 is not established, hence some people are quite hesitant with the effectiveness of the product.

If you're on the lookout for a premium omega-3 supplement, I highly recommend OmegaWell from Live Conscious instead.

It has a strong dose of EPA and DHA (800 and 600 mg, respectively) -- one of the strongest and most potent in the market today.

It also doesn't contain any preservatives and the ingredients are 100% sustainably-sourced.

  • Yes- when calling in one nite for am Trail_ (05/04/2020) An charge of $48.49 plus 2 charges of $1.08 for S&H. Only suppose to been paying the S&H- I need need the Charge of $48.49 credited back to my Debit Card_ Or send me an check- cause I do not do business like this… Make it right- – –

  • I had bad side effects from these, but my big beef was when I tried to cancel the auto ship. Several days of calling customer service, leaving a call back number and emailing got me no where. The last time I tried calling I was on hold for 55 minutes and finally hung up. During that time you have to listen to recordings about how wonderful their customer service is. If Larry King was smart he would run the other way. Anyway I finally had to call my bank and request a new debit card to get them to stop billing me. With the pain I am in from arthritis, there’s not much I wouldn’t do. I wish I never did this.

    • yes i have an allergic reaction to this and called 3 different numbers and put on hold ad also emailed and response was invalid address, so then they want you to pay for return and it takes 30 days for refund..and not with i feel your pain and customer service .. well the robot omg..takes them 3 minutes to get your money but 30 days to give it back..NOT PROFESSIONAL

  • Sat on the phone for 2 hours, never got a hold of a representative.
Now I’m going to the bank to cancel this scam, absolutely NO results!

  • don’t buy this product! you’re forced into a subscription with no way out, they provide a number AND email saying that you can contact them at any time to cancel your subscription but when you email them, they NEVER get back to you, I even called them and I’ve been on the line for 3 HOURS. the pills suck and are worthless, don’t waste your time

  • I have been taking Omega XL since July so almost 4 months with no results. I called today and got the charge canceled from my credit card. (I hope) The last charge was 10/7/20. I just got another box so I wanted to return it unopened but he said my 60 days was up! Guess I just had 60 days but because I tried to give it longer to help I was penalized. He kept trying to send me a free bottle but I ask him why since it won’t work for me. I have decided most of this stuff is a scam and the good reviews are not real. People must get paid to do the good reviews . I am so disappointed in people it is all about the almighty dollar. Never about helping people. The most irritating thing was it took so long to make the call and he talked forever trying to talk me into continuing to take it. He just said take more!. What a mess!

    • Didn’t work for me either and had a hard time canceling my order and also tried to give me a free bottle. It’s all a scam. Plus I was over charged

  • It works GREAT FOR ME, MY WIFE AND MOTHER WHO IS 76 years old , I’m aware that some people have symptoms that this won’t help and ARE THE FIRST TO COMPLAIN but after MY OWN PROVEN TEST STUDY against store bought products , my wife started using it AND AGAIN with GREAT RESULTS and now won’t go without it. We were introduced to Omega XL by my old mother who gave it to us for free to try. Now she gets it free from our subscription.,,

  • Costumer service was impossible to cancel. They tried to give me a free bottle to continue buying. Nothing worked. Called several times. Never again

  • I want to confirm about bad experiences that all you until i got same problems ‘s everyone below reviews. this company send products to me that I did not request. I cancel contract in 5 months ago. and their system sent products and charged automatics. I asked to refund but did not pay any back.

  • I used for 4 month when I had no positive results I tried taking several pills a day and still no results. Thankfully I never fell for the automatic shipments. When I stopped ordering they sent me a free bottle. I can’t believe people like me are still falling for the TV adds they are running. It reminds me of the way people thought a pill was going to make them lose weight.
