Even the wealthiest man on earth needs to put in the same effort as others to stay in shape, so when I heard an interview about Elon Musk's routine, I was intrigued enough to want to find out more.

So, our team of personal trainers spent a few days going through as many interviews as we could find, including three hours on the Joe Rogan Experience show.

The great news is that we have a pretty good understanding of what his routine looks like, and it’s not rocket science.

And as a personal trainer, I feel obligated to say that it probably isn’t something I’d recommend.

  • Height: 6’1”
  • Weight: 180 lbs.

Elon Musk’s Daily Routine

Elon Musk's work-life balance incorporates time spent running multiple successful companies, juggling time with his family, and struggling, like most parents, to also stick to an exercise routine.

What I found most interesting is that he mentioned on the Joe Rogan Experience that he dislikes exercise and wouldn’t do it if he didn’t have to [1].

For a man so dedicated to creating multiple successful businesses, I found it striking that he can create that psychological drive to enjoy working out.

But Musk shared a few things that he tries to fit into his days.

Strength Training

Elon has a certified personal fitness coach, but he mentioned that he doesn’t work with him often.

He has a few favorite strength workouts that involve lifting weights and machines that he likes to do. Unfortunately, he doesn’t go into great detail about them.

But you can check out some of our training plans for different muscle groups and body parts for ideas.

Cardio

Elon Musk responded in a few interviews on cardio workouts and that it’s one of his least favorite things.

What he does to overcome that aversion is to get on the treadmill and watch a TV show that will draw him in.

That way, he has a distraction from the exercise that he dislikes so much.

Martial Arts

He also told Joe Rogan that he enjoys different forms of martial arts for weight loss, including Taekwondo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

He doesn’t come across as the kind of guy who would enjoy such punishment, but I can see how it would be an enjoyable distraction from his work life.

What’s His Diet Plan?

Unhealthy food on a table

Elon Musk's diet plan is probably the one area where he could make the biggest improvements.

I’ll be totally frank and say that, by the sound of it, his eating habits are pretty poor for weight loss.

Elon Musk admitted to Joe Rogan that he likes to eat tasty food and not think too much about nutrients.

That means eating pizza, burgers, and hot dogs, and he’ll wash it all down with a Diet Coke.

Intermittent fasting has become a hot topic in the fitness industry, and by extending the time between your last and first meal overnight by a couple of hours, you can boost your metabolism enough to target more fat reserves, according to research from the journal Nutrients [2].

Overall, having talked about this with my dietitian, she thinks that Musk could gain a lot of health and energy benefits that would be a big deal for a man with such a hectic daily schedule.

Basically, don’t follow his lead when it comes to your diet and instead focus on a carefully planned and healthy approach to eating fat burning foods. That means no fast food, processed food, sugar, or preservatives.

“The older I get, the harder it is to stay lean, that's for sure!”

Does He Take Supplements?

It’s unclear whether Elon Musk takes supplements, but there are a few that he would be able to benefit from.

First of all, because he has so little time for exercise, he could gain more from the few hours by taking a top pre-workout supplement for men.

It won’t bring on superpowers but could boost motivation and endurance enough to train a bit harder.

And for some extra help with weight management, I’d recommend taking a fat-burning supplement.

Secondly, by learning when to take a fat burner, he would be able to have more control over fasting times and burn off some extra calories.

That should help with getting to and maintaining an ideal weight with more efficiency.

Elon Musk's Approach to Mental Fitness

Elon Musk's mental fitness regime is as vital as his physical workouts.

Embracing practices like meditation, stress management techniques, and cognitive exercises, Musk ensures a well-rounded approach to health.

This focus on mental well-being is essential for someone juggling the demands of leading multiple innovative companies.

By prioritizing mental fitness, Musk demonstrates the importance of a balanced lifestyle, integrating mind and body wellness to effectively handle the immense pressures and challenges of his high-profile roles.

FAQs

How Many Hours Does Elon Musk Work Out?

Elon Musk doesn’t work out much, and he hasn’t confirmed if there is a dedicated time every day. He plans out all his work, which can be up to 100 hours a week, and his family time as well.

How Did Elon Musk Lose Weight So Fast?

Elon Musk lost weight so fast through a combination of avoiding sugar and increasing his fasting times. While it doesn’t look like he has the perfect diet or extreme fasting times, those changes seem to have helped him lose over 25 pounds.
