Ewan McGregor is one of those Hollywood actors who has gone through a wide range of roles that have taken him to extremes when it comes to physical fitness. And ever since he starred as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars and got nominated for best actor in Moulin Rouge, his physique has changed a lot.

As a personal fitness coach, these transformations interest me the most, and I love researching how celebrities achieve them.

So, our team spent over a day researching interviews and social media posts to come up with the Ewan McGregor workout routine.

Ewan McGregor Stats

The Ewan McGregor Workout Routine

The Ewan McGregor workout routine doesn’t require you to allocate two hours each day to lifting weights. In fact, it doesn’t even require you to have a gym membership, as you can do most of the exercises at home or outdoors.

Monday: Cardio

Ewan McGregor likes to run outdoors and limits his use of a treadmill to when he’s traveling or on a movie set. He doesn’t seem to take running to the extreme, but he sets the bar high enough at the start of the week with an 8-mile run.

I couldn't find details about his intended speed, but I would suggest to readers that they break a run down into different speeds and inclines, as that variation can have a positive impact on fitness levels [1].

Tuesday: Rest Day

It’s not a completely lazy day dedicated to working on the imprint your backside makes on the couch. Ewan is big into getting outdoors, and that involves hiking and walking in nature.

This can also help reduce soreness from the previous day’s run.

Wednesday: Circuit Training

It seems like Ewan does a circuit workout routine when he has to prepare for action roles. Those are mainly designed to increase his strength, but they can also reduce his fat reserves.

Here’s what I would suggest you do:

  • Burpees (45 seconds)
  • Mountain climbers (45 seconds)
  • Battle rope (45 seconds)
  • Jumping jacks (45 seconds)
  • Knee-high squat jumps (45 seconds)
  • Lying leg raises (45 seconds)

Thursday: Cardio

Thursday Endurance Training

Ewan continues his workout routine by running 5–8 miles, depending on how busy he is with making movies. He prefers to run outdoors, but you could also do this on a treadmill.

Friday: Rest Day

It’s another rest day. But again, try to stay active to avoid your muscles getting too stiff.

Saturday: Cardio

It’s another cardio session for this workout routine, and this time, the aim is to run eight miles. Remember to keep track of your times for different routes you run to see what your progress is over time.

Sunday: Rest

Plan some outdoor activities for Sunday. This is an ideal day to get active with family and friends, whether it’s for a walk or some slightly more strenuous hikes.

“What matters most with any regimen, whether it’s to lose weight or stop drinking or smoking, is your willingness to seek help and your desire to say ’no more.”

What’s His Diet Plan?

Ewan McGregor's diet today is all about healthy, fresh ingredients and preparing all meals from scratch. But there have been movies that have required him to do the opposite.

In Trainspotting, McGregor plays a heroin addict, and he didn’t look healthy and ripped at that time as a result of eating fried food and drinking lots of alcohol.

But once he branched out into roles for Moulin Rouge and Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars, everything changed, including his diet. He stopped drinking beer and other alcoholic beverages because he felt they interfered with his parenting.

This is what a day would look like:

  • Breakfast: Scrambled eggs and a protein smoothie
  • Lunch: Lean protein like chicken breast with vegetables
  • Dinner: Large salad with lean meat or fish

Does He Take Supplements?

Fitness supplement

Ewan McGregor hasn’t spoken about taking any specific supplements. But considering that he goes running a lot and aims to stay on top of his weight, my dietitian highlighted two good supplements for anyone who wants to follow this routine.

First off, a good-quality protein powder will be vital, as it can support both recovery times and weight loss [2]. I’ve seen many people lose a lot of weight by adding more protein to their diets.

The other thing to consider is a fat-burning supplement. These use natural ingredients to trigger a fat metabolism and burn off some more calories each day.
