According to an article found on the LiveScience website, free radicals are atoms linked to aging, cell damage, and diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease [1].

Unfortunately, you can’t avoid free radicals. But you can neutralize their harmful effects by supplementing with a “free radical neutralizer” like this glutathione from NOW.

Their Setria (trusted Japanese brand) Glutathione, which comes in a reduced form, may help you achieve a healthy immune system.

Our tests indicate that it can also aid your body’s detoxification process.

According to an article found on Ask The Scientists website, the term reduced doesn’t mean there is less glutathione; it means the glutathione is in its stable, active form, which is when it gets to do its job of working in your cells to neutralize free radicals and other oxidants [2].

Other ingredients in this glutathione supplement include milk thistle extract, which supports liver health, and alpha-lipoic acid (ALA).

Our team also found that the product is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

This liposomal glutathione supplement relies on this advanced technology to support your liver, brain, and immune function. It also aims to help with concentration, focus, and energy.

If you’re sensitive to the taste of tablets, you’d be glad to know that this liposomal glutathione supplement comes in easy-to-swallow soft gel capsules with no taste.

We also appreciate that the Core Med Science Liposomal Glutathione supplement is shelf-stable, so there’s no need to refrigerate it.

Organic milk thistle, which contains the antioxidant Silymarin, works to support liver function. Grape seed extract is also added for an extra boost of antioxidants.

It's also the first glutathione supplement product on this list that contains vitamin C, a component that we've always appreciated and that helps us detoxify.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Provides maximum absorption of glutathione
  • Tastes great
  • Boosts energy levels

Cons

  • Proprietary blend makes it impossible to tell how much glutathione you’re getting

This is the only glutathione supplement on this list that comes in liquid form.

CCL Advanced claims their sublingual glutathione spray goes straight into the bloodstream through the membranes of the mouth, which means there is maximum absorption in the body.

We liked the fact that it can also increase intracellular levels of glutathione by over 10% within seven hours.

This product contains glutathione precursors such as ashwagandha, an ancient medicinal herb that can improve brain function, decrease blood sugar and cortisol levels, and help fight symptoms of anxiety and depression [3].

The serving size is 12 sprays. However, you can’t really tell how much reduced glutathione you’re getting per spray because of the product’s proprietary blend.

How We Tested These Supplements

As a health and performance coach, I understand the importance of choosing the right supplements to support overall well-being and performance.

In testing the best glutathione supplements, I employed a comprehensive approach, focusing on ingredients, effectiveness, price, and additional criteria based on extensive research and personal experience.

Ingredients

The quality and type of glutathione used in the supplements were my primary focus.

I examined whether the supplements contained reduced L-glutathione, the most bioavailable form, and checked for the presence of any beneficial supporting ingredients like Vitamin C or alpha-lipoic acid, which can enhance glutathione absorption and efficacy.

The absence of harmful fillers, artificial colors, or preservatives was also a key factor in my assessment.

Effectiveness

To evaluate effectiveness, I not only used these supplements myself but also gathered feedback from clients who had incorporated them into their health regimes.

I monitored for noticeable improvements in areas typically associated with glutathione supplementation, such as enhanced detoxification, improved skin health, and overall energy levels.

Any clinical studies or research supporting the effectiveness of the specific formulations were also taken into account.

Price

Price comparison was essential to determine the value offered by each supplement. I compared the cost relative to the dosage, ingredient quality, and the number of servings per package.

This helped in assessing whether the supplements were competitively priced and offered good value for money.

Bioavailability

Glutathione's effectiveness largely depends on its bioavailability.

I evaluated the form of glutathione used in the supplements and any additional ingredients that might enhance its absorption and utilization in the body.

Manufacturing Standards and Quality Control

The manufacturing process and quality control measures of the supplement brands were scrutinized.

I looked for products manufactured in facilities that adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and those that underwent rigorous quality control and testing.

User Reviews and Testimonials

To broaden the scope of the evaluation, I analyzed user reviews and testimonials.

This provided insights into the experiences of a wider range of users, highlighting common benefits and any potential issues with the supplements.

Glutathione Buyer's Guide

glutathione supplements

With so many options on the market right now, it can be difficult picking the best glutathione supplement that will work for you.

To help you choose, here are a few factors that I think are worth considering when shopping for the best glutathione supplement.

Dosage

pills

To effectively increase the glutathione production levels in your body and maximize its benefits, you must first know the appropriate dosage.

For glutathione to manifest its whitening effects, one must take a double or triple dosage. That’s because it’s the excess glutathione that induces the whitening result.

Here’s a general guide you can use to compute for the right dosage based on your weight:

You must take 20 to 40 mg of glutathione daily per kilogram of body weight and take it once or twice a day for three to six months to see any visible results, according to the Journal of Clinical & Experimental Dermatology Research [4].

For example, if you weigh 65 kg, you should multiply that number by 30 (average of 20 to 40 mg) to get the right dose. That means you would have to consume 1,950 mg of glutathione per day to see any whitening and anti-aging effects.

Purity

taking pills

Next, check the ingredients list for any additives, fillers, or binders.

Fillers are used to make a product appear more substantial. This means some of the powder you see inside glutathione capsules isn’t the active ingredient; it’s just powder incorporated to “bulk” it up.

Binders are used to hold all the ingredients together, so they retain the shape of a tablet. Lactose and sucrose are sometimes used as binders, so keep an eye on those if you're lactose intolerant.

If you are vegan or vegetarian, make sure to check if the company uses plant-based cellulose for their glutathione capsules instead of animal-based gelatin.

Complementary Ingredients

As mentioned earlier, glutathione works best when it’s in a reduced or active state.

See if the product uses L-Glutathione. If they do, that means the glutathione is in its reduced form and in its working state.

“Glutathione protects cells from oxidants through recycling of vitamins C and E.”

- Joseph Pizzorno, Naturopathic Physician

Also, if glutathione is supported by ingredients such as N-Acetyl-Cysteine and Alpha Lipoic Acid, that’s a good sign. These two components can potentially enhance the effects of glutathione.

Biologically active compounds like phospholipids can also increase the bioavailability or absorption of glutathione in your body.

Certifications

Nothing gives a consumer peace of mind more than knowing that a supplement has been examined by a third-party entity for safety and quality.

If a glutathione supplement product is GMP-certified, that means its manufacturing process has been verified as safe and adherent to the highest quality standards.

FAQs

What Are the Bad Side Effects of Glutathione?

The bad side effects of taking glutathione are still not researched enough. However, there is some concern about glutathione supplementation triggering stomach issues such as cramping and bloating. Some people may also have allergic reactions to glutathione and develop rashes while taking it [5]. Taking glutathione supplements long-term has also been linked to lower zinc levels [6].

Can I Take Glutathione and Vitamin C Together?

Yes, you can take glutathione and vitamin C together. It is highly recommended. Studies show that Vit C may increase glutathione levels by attacking free radicals first, thereby sparing glutathione. It also converts oxidized glutathione back into its active form.

Is Glutathione Whitening Permanent?

No, glutathione whitening is not permanent. Whether administered orally or intravenously, you must keep on taking the best glutathione supplements to sustain its whitening effects.

What Is the Historical Significance of Glutathione in Human Health?

Glutathione, known as the "master antioxidant," was discovered in 1888 by J. de Rey-Pailhade. Initially identified in yeast cells, its crucial role in human health, particularly in detoxification, immune response, and cellular protection against oxidative stress, wasn't fully understood until the 20th century. This historical journey highlights its enduring importance in health and wellness.

What Are Natural Sources of Glutathione, and How Do They Compare to Supplements?

Natural sources of glutathione include avocados, spinach, asparagus, garlic, and Brussels sprouts. Incorporating these foods into your diet can naturally enhance your body's glutathione reserves. While these foods can boost glutathione levels, supplements provide a consistent and measurable dose, offering a more direct way to increase glutathione levels in the body.

How Does Glutathione Benefit the Skin, and What Are the Safety Considerations?

Glutathione benefits the skin by detoxifying, potentially lightening the skin by inhibiting melanin production and reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. However, it's essential to be aware of potential interactions and contraindications, especially if you are on medication, pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a medical condition like liver or kidney issues. Consulting with a healthcare professional is crucial to ensure the safe and effective use of glutathione supplements.
