Glutathione supplements have been growing in popularity over the last few years because of their numerous health-promoting abilities.

This master antioxidant can destroy free radicals that cause oxidative stress, fight inflammation, boost the immune system, detox the liver, support skin health, and more.

Glutathione is naturally produced in your body, but glutathione levels also decrease as you age, thereby making supplementation necessary.

Our team spent the last few months reviewing the best glutathione supplements available on the market.

If you’re still on the fence about which of them you should purchase, this guide might just help you make the right decision.

Read on to see our top recommendations.

Our Top Glutathione Supplements

1 - NOW Glutathione (Editor's Choice)

NOW Glutathione

Free radicals are atoms linked to aging, cell damage, and diseases such as cancer, atherosclerosis, and Alzheimer's disease [1].

Unfortunately, you can’t avoid free radicals. But you can neutralize their harmful effects by supplementing with a “free radical neutralizer” like this glutathione from NOW.

Their Setria (trusted Japanese brand) Glutathione, which comes in a reduced form, may help you achieve a healthy and immune system and aid your body’s detoxification process.

The term reduced doesn’t mean there is less glutathione; it means the glutathione is in its stable, active form, which is when it gets to do its job of working in your cells to neutralize free radicals and other oxidants [2].

Pros
  • Helps reduce inflammation
  • Boosts energy levels and brain function
  • Gives skin a youthful and radiant appearance
  • Good Manufacturing Process (GMP) quality assured
Cons
  • Some users experienced stomach issues while taking this supplement

Other ingredients include milk thistle extract that supports liver health and alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), an element known for its antioxidant properties and ability to scavenge free radicals.

NOW recommends taking one 500 mg capsule per day, preferably on an empty stomach.

2 - Core Med Science Liposomal Glutathione

Core Med science Liposomal Glutathione

Core Med Science Liposomal Glutathione aims to solve the absorption issue that most plain glutathione powders have by using liposomes - microscopic liquid spheres that envelop and protect glutathione to increase its absorption.

This liposomal glutathione relies on this advanced technology to support your liver, brain, and immune function. It also aims to help with concentration, focus, and energy.

If you’re sensitive to the taste of tablets, you’d be glad to know that this supplement comes in easy to swallow soft gel capsules with no taste.

Core Med Science Liposomal Glutathione is also shelf-stable, so there’s no need to refrigerate it.

Like NOW, this brand also uses pure reduced Setria glutathione.

Pros
  • Improves sleep, energy, mood, and focus
  • Uses clean ingredients
  • Glutathione capsules are made from non-GMO sunflower oil
Cons
  • The gel capsules tend to stick together

Each soft gel capsule contains 250 mg of L-Glutathione.

Core Med Science recommends taking 2 gel capsules on an empty stomach per day. You should wait 30-45 minutes before eating or taking other supplements.

11 - RKMD Original Glutathione Formula (OGF)

RKMD Original Glutathione Formula (OGF)

This glutathione supplement uses an exclusive formula that is different from the rest of the supplements on the market.

RKMD Original Glutathione Formula claims to be made up of L-glutamine and N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) which helps replenish glutathione naturally in your body. You absorb this precursor in the intestine and turn it into glutathione.

The supplement also activates the Nrf2 protein, signaling the body to make glutathione, while simultaneously providing the essential chemicals your body needs to make the substance.

OGF acts as an antioxidant and an antitoxin, helps enhance the immune system, and helps fight aging. It also improves cellular function, leading to improved brain activity, skin health, and internal organ function.

Pros
  • Increases energy levels naturally
  • Helps fight inflammation
  • Boosts glutathione levels in a short timespan

Factors To Consider When Choosing Glutathione Supplements

glutathione supplements

With so many options on the market right now, it can be difficult picking the best glutathione supplement that will work for you.

To help you choose, here are a few factors that I think are worth considering when shopping for a glutathione supplement.

Dosage

pills

To effectively increase the glutathione levels in your body and maximize its benefits, you must first know the appropriate dosage.

If you're taking glutathione for its general health benefits such as recovery from oxidative damage, cellular detoxification, and fighting inflammation, a daily dose of 500 mg to 1000 mg daily should be sufficient.

If you’re taking glutathione for its skin whitening effects, determining the right dosage will require you to examine several factors: your weight, metabolism, general health, etc.

For glutathione to manifest its whitening effects, one must take a double or triple dosage. That’s because it’s the excess glutathione that induces the whitening result.

Here’s a general guide you can use to compute for the right dosage based on your weight:

You must take 20 to 40 mg of glutathione daily per kilogram of body weight and take it once or twice a day for three to six months to see any visible results [4].

For example, if you weigh 65 kg, you should multiply that number by 30 (average of 20 to 40 mg) to get the right dose. That means you would have to consume 1,950 mg of glutathione per day to see any whitening and anti-aging effects.

Note, however, that the above are just general guidelines. It’s still best to consult your physician before taking any supplements. Surely, they would give a better dosage recommendation tailored to your overall health requirements.

Purity

taking pills

Next, check the ingredients list for any additives, fillers, or binders.

Fillers are used to make a product appear more substantial. This means some of the powder you see inside glutathione capsules isn’t the active ingredient; it’s just powder incorporated to “bulk” it up.

This affects the potency of the glutathione supplement, so make sure to always check the label for fillers, so you get the best value for your money.

Binders are used to hold all the ingredients together, so they retain the shape of a tablet. Lactose and sucrose are sometimes used as binders, so keep an eye on those if you're lactose intolerant.

If you are vegan or vegetarian, make sure to check if the company uses plant-based cellulose for their glutathione capsules instead of animal-based gelatin.

While fillers and binders aren’t all unhealthy, I believe that it’s best to avoid glutathione supplements that have them because they affect the purity of the product. And if you’re someone who has food restrictions or allergies, it’s good practice to check the label for these components.

Complementary Ingredients

As mentioned earlier, glutathione works best when it’s in a reduced or active state.

See if the product uses L-Glutathione. If they do, that means the glutathione is in its reduced form and in its working state.

“Glutathione protects cells from oxidants is through recycling of vitamins C and E.”

- Joseph Pizzorno, Naturopathic Physician

Also, if glutathione is supported by ingredients such as N-Acetyl-Cysteine and Alpha Lipoic Acid, that’s a good sign. These two components can potentially enhance the effects of glutathione.

Biologically active compounds like phospholipids can also increase the bioavailability or absorption of glutathione in your body.

Certifications

Nothing gives a consumer peace of mind more than knowing that a supplement has been examined by a third-party entity for safety and quality.

If a glutathione product is GMP-certified, that means its manufacturing process has been verified as safe and adherent to the highest quality standards.

What Are the Bad Side Effects of Glutathione?

What Is The Best Glutathione Supplement?

NOW Glutathione came out as the most superior glutathione supplement out of all the products we reviewed.
