As a certified personal trainer for many years, I've worked with athletes who suffer from low energy and muscle exhaustion, so I usually advise them to take a good pre-workout supplement to remedy the situation.

One product in that category called RSP Nutrition AminoLean keeps coming up recently among fellow gym-goers, so I decided to look into it and test it out to see what’s all the hype about.

I conducted comprehensive research exploring the scientific basis of its ingredients, and I tested it with a couple of clients for a month and a half to see if it could actually provide energy and minimize post-workout soreness.

Let's begin.

What is Amino Lean?

Amino Lean product in purple background

AminoLean is a pre-workout supplement marketed to male and female athletes as a natural weight management solution.

It contains fourteen amino acids that promote muscle protein synthesis for faster recovery and tissue growth after exercise [1].

Based on my experience, it has gone through some changes with regard to packaging, but the ingredients combined to boost energy levels, focus, and weight loss remained the same.

How Does AminoLean Work?

AminoLean works by supplying essential amino acids (EAAs) to the exercising muscles, allowing the body to repair post-workout muscle damage and rapidly grow new tissue fibers.

Furthermore, RSP Nutrition, the manufacturer of AminoLean, claims that its added stimulants can improve metabolism, ultimately providing the body with more energy and enabling it to lose weight.

Finally, the cognitive enhancers and vitamins in this sports supplement might help reduce hunger and build immunity, possibly allowing you to cut calories without compromising your health [2].

After taking AminoLean once a day for the first week, I didn’t feel any significant change in my energy or focus. In fact, my morning coffee probably had a more discernible effect.

Ingredients

The ingredients in AminoLean have been studied for their ability to accelerate muscle building and weight loss. However, the label does not specify the exact amount of each nutrient because it is hiding behind a proprietary blend.

Amino Acid Blend (5 grams)

Branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) have been shown, in one of the studies found on the National Center for Biotechnology Information website, to provide the best muscle recovery after exercise [3]. They make up three out of the fourteen amino acids found in this amino energy supplement.

However, since the label does not indicate the exact dosages of each amino acid, we cannot guarantee the efficacy of this combination. Our tests show the same.

Weight Management Blend (1.5 grams)

The weight management blend in this supplement contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) powder, which has been shown to promote fat cell death and hasten metabolism regardless of what you eat [4].

"This strongly suggests that the observed effects of CLA on body composition were independent of diet."

- Jean-Michel Gaullier Ph.D., Scandinavia Clinical Research

Although the amount of CLA, L-carnitine L-tartrate, green tea extract, and green coffee extract in this blend is unknown, these natural weight management ingredients have been extensively studied for their effectiveness in terms of weight loss.

Energy and Focus Blend (130 mg)

This energy blend contains natural green tea extract and theobromine, which are stimulants that can provide a good energy boost.

Furthermore, one of the studies found on the PubMed website indicates that green tea extract contains caffeine and catechins, which can both help increase metabolism and improve focus [5].

How Does It Benefit Athletes?

A woman running on stairs

RSP AminoLean may benefit athletes by suppressing hunger, increasing energy, and reducing muscle soreness.

As a result, athletes can reduce caloric intake, increase workout intensity, and gain lean muscle mass, leading to enhanced performance and improved body composition [6].

After a month of taking this supplement, one serving per day, I noticed that my hunger had slightly decreased, but I still lacked the energy to increase my workout intensity.

Does AminoLean Cause Any Negative Effects?

RSP Nutrition AminoLean may cause negative effects like anxiety, restlessness, and agitation, which are common for caffeinated sports supplements. It's an especially noticeable side effect when the user is sensitive to caffeine. Worse, they might even experience the jitters after taking it.

Furthermore, some users of this product have reported stomach upsets, bloating, and nausea after taking three servings.

After a month of using AminoLean, my clients and I increased the number of servings to two to three per day to boost energy levels, but that caused stomach upset and irregular blood pressure spikes for many of us.

In What Flavors Does RSP Aminolean Come?

RSP AminoLean comes in six flavors: Pink Lemonade, Blue Raspberry, Blackberry Pomegranate, Watermelon, Grapes, and my favorite one!

I've tasted all of them, and the fruit punch flavor stood out the most because of the balance of its sweetness and sourness.

For me, it tastes almost exactly like lightly sweetened Berry Cherry Kool-Aid with zero sugar.

Pros
  • May increase physical and mental energy
  • May help build muscle faster
  • Rich in antioxidants due to green coffee bean extract
Cons
  • It has a proprietary blend
  • Maximum servings may cause jitters in caffeine-sensitive people
  • Contains artificial flavors, citric acid, and malic acid

How Does It Stack Up to Alternatives?

Supplements and gym equipment

There are three alternatives to RSP AminoLean that help with muscle retention while losing fat, such as:

  • Transparent Labs: This supplement improves workout performance and endurance. It uses non-artificial components and avoids harmful fillers. The caffeine dosage is balanced, making it suitable for those sensitive to stimulants.
  • Gorilla Mode: A pre-workout supplement with a potent formula designed to boost energy, focus, and muscle pumps. It has a comprehensive ingredient list that supports enhanced workouts.
  • 4 Gauge:  A pre-workout supplement recognized for its unique shotgun shell design and natural ingredients. It boosts energy and focus during workouts without causing jitters. Its formula is developed for sustained performance and mental clarity.

The main difference between them is that AminoLean ingredients are almost exclusively in proprietary blends.

On the contrary, the other three products I mentioned provide exact amounts of each ingredient on the label, so you know how much you're getting from the supplement.

I’ve tried and tested all three of them extensively with my clients, and all of them proved quite effective at boosting energy and pumps.

Cost and Availability

RSP AminoLean is available online from RSP Nutrition and other retailers.

The amount of each ingredient is not listed on the label, but still, I daresay it is reasonably priced given that it contains EAAs for muscle building and stimulants for increased energy.

To save money, I ordered multiple bottles at once to take advantage of the company's discounts.

Our Verdict on RSP AminoLean Supplement

AminoLean can promote natural weight management because it contains all of the essential amino acids needed by the body to recover faster and build calorie-demanding muscles.

However, hiding behind a proprietary blend is never a good sign for me, so I would strongly suggest you avoid it, as I think you can benefit more from a performance enhancer like Gorilla Mode, which has consistently shown great results in my professional practice for a few years now.

Gorilla Mode discloses the exact amount of each stimulant, nootropic, and amino acid, so you can be sure what and how much of it you’re putting in your body.
